Night Vision series 2022 - present

Emmy Mikelson is an interdisciplinary artist, arts administrator, and educator. She was raised in Iowa and lives in New York City, where she received her MFA from Hunter College, CUNY.  Currently completing a MA in Industrial/Organizational Psychology at the CUNY School for Professional Studies, her research is focused on errors in cognitive reasoning, such as the misrepresentation of chance and the inability to perceive randomness.  These common errors in judgement render us stuck and inflexible -- not unlike a deer frozen in the headlights.

Her artwork investigates the strangeness embedded in familiar environments, revealing speculative worlds within our own.  Through references to microbial landscapes and dense forest ecosystems, her artwork and studies in psychology support an exploration of the unseen and unexpected in both environmental contexts and human interactions.

As an arts administrator, Emmy brings her interdisciplinary perspective to enhance creative programs and organizational development. Her dual expertise in fine arts and psychology provides a unique approach to collaboration and education. In her current role at The Cooper Union, she leads the management of the School of Art’s fabrication labs and studios, overseeing operations and strategic initiatives to support innovative learning environments.
